Necessary Endings

After a 24 year career in sales and operations, I left AT&T. It was a good run solving problems, but it was time to end.

I had to let go of something familiar to take hold of something new.

I’m leaving the staff at Granger Community Church after 6 years of oversight with groups, care, and counseling. It has been a good run solving problems, but it’s time to end.

As the church goes down a new path with groups, care, and counseling, I’ll pursue counseling, mediation, and letter writing services in private practice. The transition is a positive one, already under way with the official date of March 31.

I am letting go of something familiar to take hold of something new.

During this process, here are a few things I found helpful from Henry Cloud’s book, Necessary Endings.

  • “Make the concept of endings a normal occurrence and a normal part of business and life, so you expect and look for them rather than seeing them as a problem.”
  • “This is a fundamental truth about endings: you have to be able to face losing some things you might want in order to be free to do the right thing. If you can’t, you are stuck.”
  • “Everything I have that is of value has come from being willing to end something that I was doing and go to the next step.”

We let go of our children to take hold of enjoying them as adults. We let go of hurt and anger to make room for joy and peace. We let go of old behaviors to take hold of new ones.

It’s a busy season of planning and change, but I’m excited to see what’s to come.
